Los Angeles Fires 2025: Update Letter

Thoughts on disaster response and Move with Cait offerings.

The city of Los Angeles in front of the San Gabriel mountains in the late afternoon/early evening.

Dear friends,

It’s difficult to overstate the impact that the wildfires of this past month (and the compounding pressure of an antagonistic federal government) have made on the psyche of Los Angeles. No matter where you were, this seismic event that we lived through and continue to live through together has changed all of us who call Los Angeles home. All your griefs are valid. Your relationships to the land, your homes, and your sense of safety may have been lost or altered, and each loss warrants attention and care.

I love this place too. I would not be who I am without the loom of Los Angeles weaving me into being. Like many of you I’ve ridden the roller coaster of grief through immediate response actions like volunteering and sitting with displaced folks, all the while considering how I would like to be part of our communal recovery, both in the short and long term.

Here are few things I know about how disaster response can work, and some guiding principles for how Move With Cait will be responding in the months and years ahead:

  1. Response actions are contextual. What works/is useful changes over time.
  2. Response actions meet the needs in front of us and don’t demand a certain behavior from those affected.
  3. No one has to earn the right to ask for support, there is no competition for who is hurting the most.

In light of these tenets, here’s what you can expect from me through June 2025. After June, I’ll reassess my capacity and the needs of the community, and may or may not make changes at that time.

  • The winter Healing With Yoga series has been moved back to Feb 17th. I am reserving a minimum of 3 spots for folks displaced by or experiencing job loss due to the fires. These spots are pay-what-you-can. I do ask that you consider $50 as a starting point, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Please reach out or apply, and make sure to mark LA Fires in your application.
  • Private Sessions - I am announcing a significant change in my model below. For folks displaced by or experiencing job loss due to the fires I will be offering 2 free slots and 4 pay-what-you-can slots weekly.
  • Community Yoga Class - Normally $15 per class, but until June, this class will be free for anyone displaced by or experiencing job loss due to the fires.

If you or someone you know would like to be supported during this time, please reach out, or follow the links for the above offerings.

In strength and solidarity,
Cait
